AUK UPDATE –post by Nina

Posted by: nina | July 9, 2007 |

The little auks are still incubating their eggs. We have been searching for their nests so that we will be able to see how many eggs hatch and how many chicks will leave their nests. To find the nests we crawl around on the rocks and peek into every crevice with a flashlight.

Most of the nests are very deep and you can just catch a glimpse of the birds. Some of the birds have more exposed nests. In order to be able to find the nests again, we mark them with a wooden stakes.
Here is Nell at nest 33:

Both males and females incubate the eggs. When they are not warming their eggs or out feeding in the ocean, they sit out on the rocks and do a lot of socializing with neighbors.

Today it seemed like the glaucous gulls were patrolling the hillside constantly. The little auks hardly had time to sit before the gull came back through. Here is what the sky looked like most of the day:

After a full day of work in the colony Derek and Zach decided it was time for a midnight swim!!!
Note the glacier ice in the water!

Dear Nell
It’s so nice to read the blog! You look pretty darn cute! I bet the auks do too. Any resemblance to our stuffed avian mascot? Can you post a close-up?
I’m missing you, as is the rest of Jena, and thinking of you often.(Hourly. ‘Let’s see if she’s written!’)Today I’m giving S the local tour, but no italian ice and orange ferries cause it’s german and rainy and you’re at the north pole. tja! Best of luck, and happy hatching!

Spottie Ottie,
the pictures on this blog are breathtaking, thank you for doing the land and animals some justice for those of us who do see the sunset.

Maria´s Irish poetfriend from Oxford plays a dirty trick on scientists of the far future: he takes shells from Californian beaches and leaves them in Galicia, from Cornwall to New Zealand and wherever he goes to disrupt their hyper advanced research. I dont think he´s ever made it to the Arctic though, nor are little awks and sea shells the same thing so I think your research is A O.K. in fact I think it is incredible, auk-some (KNOT!).

Me I´m picking up sea shells to take back to Camelot, without chaotic intentions, just thinking of you.

you look deliriously happy to stick stakes marking nests with your little mittened hands…in which case i’m deliriously happy for you…not much to say except i’m missing you and love you’re corny, i mean clever, wordplay.

hiiiioooooooooooo

keep up the good work!

Hey Nina- great fun reading all the posts!! Glad to hear that you are there safe and sound and all is going well! Had a great trip back east and lots of fun at the party- miss you-keep the update coming. I am going to check on Jonathan and Max this weekend -great pics!

Hi there up north… I really envy you the time in the colony with all the LIAK’s flying around. I can see that you have a great time there. It looks like you are settled in for good in the base. I hope you will finally be able to sample some zooplankton brought to the nests by adults. I wonder what will be this year like in terms of food composition???
I send you all the best from Winnipeg (central Canada; 3000km from the nearest ocean) and wish you great time in Hornsund.
Keep writing the posts - good piece of everyday reading.

Zach, you are crazy for jumping in that water!!

Wow you guys are some hardy folk. It looks like mars in the first picture!
nice!

Thank you for this. I really enjoyed reading it. Hope to see more writings like this from you. It was interesting to read about it.
