Heaven is a Trapper’s hut called Hytevikka — post by Nina

A few days ago we had a chance to visit one of my favorite places in the world; a little trapper’s hut called Hytevikka. The hut was originally built by and used by Norwegian trappers who hunted foxes and polar bears. This year it houses 7 geologists. We were taken there by our friends Sean and Paul in their zodiac (rubber boat).

When we got there, we were greeted by the team of geologists who are all from Poland except for one Russian geologist and an American undergraduate from Lawrence College named Emily Thien. We enjoyed tea inside the hut and then headed to the little auk colony on the plateau behind. It was spectacular, peaceful and sunny…heavenly.

Cozy Hytevikka. The large timbers by the front door are to keep bears out.

Dear Nina,

Following Steven’s paper in PNAS (about diet shift in Adelie’s), I emailed you, got an “out of reply” and a link to your Svalbard blog. Great job ! Glad to see you are visiting one of your favorite places in the world (what about Copa ??) Which leads me to the next question: would you be opened to an interview about little auks & climate change for our sciencepoles web site ?

Cheers, enjoy and good luck for your work

Gauthier

Nina, let someone else touch the camera so we can have the occasional picture of you! Otherwise, I won’t be able to quash the rumor that Zach, Nell, and Derek cooked you and served you up for dinner on American Night.

Nina, it looks alot like Copa! No wonder you like it… Cute hut with fabulous seabirds all around. Someday I’ll have to get back to the polar regions, but for now I enjoy reminiscing through your adventures!

Cheers!

Great pics! You guys look like your having fun! Makes me want to run away from my cube and start hitchin north!
With all the climate change going on you are sure to find some gems in them ther rocks!

It looks like a very nice place to visit to run away from problems.
We are making environmental genetics research so this could be interesting place to visit for sampling as well, thanks for the beautiful pictures.
