So I just finished the Grimm’s “frog king†and I found it really interesting. Beauty has no redeeming qualities except that the sun is even amazed by her beauty. At least three separate times she shows that she is childish, rude, and at one point she looses her temper. At this point the frog that she throws against the wall becomes a handsome prince and they get married. I found it odd that this Grimm story seemed to teach nothing and normal punishment of “bad†people didn’t take place. Beauty doesn’t have to overcome anything and the only reason she even tolerated the frog was because her father made her do it. It kind of threw me for a loop…what do other people think?
actually…the more that i’ve thought about it…i guess in an interesting weird kind of way the story teaches children to listen to their parents. While Beauty listens reluctantly she does listen and then the frog becomes a prince…i don’t know. it’s hard for me to see it this way because she seems like a snot.
