I know the new essay isn’t due until Friday, but I’m starting it now and having some problems. I think calling it a review is making me hesitate a little bit. I don’t know what it really means to write a review. My idea is fine, but does the language have to be different? I don’t know. Also, are we supposed to be talking more about the author in these reviews, or more about the text, and do either of these things require research? Are the other stories enough? I don’t know, I feeling a little lost.

How is everyone’s research going? I went to the library tonight and actually had some problems despite the instructions we were given in class. My results are really narrow and one of the books i really wanted wasn’t where it was supposed to be. Anyone having better luck than me?

So I just finished the Grimm’s “frog king” and I found it really interesting. Beauty has no redeeming qualities except that the sun is even amazed by her beauty. At least three separate times she shows that she is childish, rude, and at one point she looses her temper. At this point the frog that she throws against the wall becomes a handsome prince and they get married. I found it odd that this Grimm story seemed to teach nothing and normal punishment of “bad” people didn’t take place. Beauty doesn’t have to overcome anything and the only reason she even tolerated the frog was because her father made her do it. It kind of threw me for a loop…what do other people think?

I am not sure what I want to write about yet, but the story I found most interesting was Donkeyskin. I enjoyed that version the best and it drew me in more than the others. I thought the ring test was also a interesting twist on the slipper test. It seemed more magical to me than feet. I also liked that Cinderella (or Donkeyskin) gave the prince the ring and she wasn’t tricked into it. I think the Cinderella in the Donkeyskin versions is much more independent and it’s easier for me to like her because she can help her self
