More Green ads

This ad I just saw on tv. it reminded me of the aquafina one we saw in class where everyone is drinking aquafina in bars instead of alcohol. i didnt like this ad as much though.
It’s the one called “Fishing”

Chevy Nova

In another class of mine the Chevy Nova advertising story came up. It is said that the chevy car called the Nova did not sell well in Latin America. While it was popular in the U.S., the company could not understand why the sales were falling short out of the country. Supposedly [...]

Playstation White is Coming!

These are some controversial Playstation ads that inform a racial discourse…The contrast between black and white reminded me of other ads accused of being racist (for example the VW lip ads posted earlier on the blog)

Wind Energy, Green Ads

The presentation of Green Advertising made me think of this television commercial I saw a while ago. I really love it, but after the presentation I now wonder if it is more propaganda-like and giving a better image of the company, especially sinces its a GE commercial.
Watch the one called “Jar”. [...]

Australian Beer

Prof. Kronenberg talked about signifiers in beer commercials and about the country-of-origin effect that some companies use. Foster’s australian beer uses some of the same tactics most notably accent and stereotypes about australians. here are two commercials and both are reasonably entertaining.

Salma Hayek for Diet Coke

I meant to post this after the presentation on Mexican Americans in Advertising..
I remember an old television commercial for Diet Coke featuring Salma Hayek (if anyone can find will you send post it? I’ve looked everywhere on the internet). She’s in the kitchen of this really busy restaurant quickly eating and enjoying the fancy [...]

I AM AFRICAN

Another recent campaign for AIDS. These were series of print ads featuring celebrities. I saw them in magazines like Cosmo…I dont know what other magazines they might have appeared in. The last one with Gwyneth Paltrow was especially controversial. I say they are patronizing….
ALL of the ads can be seen on this [...]

Gay or Asian?

I was introduced to this article in another class. It is from the men’s magazine Details (I think it is similar to GQ). In the magazine the article is listed under the “Anthropology” section and is a feature every month titled “Gay or ______?” This month was “gay or asian?” The [...]

On high heels and big butts..

We saw the ad of the swimmer in high heels and started the discussion about whether it was empowering or not.  I think the recent nike ad campaign is not very successful but tries to empower the subject too.   Thoughts?

Nostalgia + Milk?

This ad reminds me of the Walgreen’s perfectland one we saw in class. I like it a lot better though. I don’t think it really brings up nostalgia but uses the idea in a different way. (It’s called “Dreams”)
