Making athletes more human

This is my last post, so I thought I show some of my favorite commercials.
I really like the ESPN commercials where they make the athletes play jokes on each other. They make the athletes more human, and I think this technique is great since it makes them more relatable to fans.

The Office-Racism

We watched three different TV shows that featured stereotypes, and they reminded me of one of my favorite shows–The Office.
This show has a lot of ethnic, sexist, etc jokes that can be pretty offensive.  However, Michael Scott believes he is not racist.  Unfortunately, in his attempts to prove this, he ends up making situations even [...]

Annoying Quiznos Girl

I am a die hard basketball fan and when I am watching games, they always play this annoying commercial.

The problem is the Asian girl and her laugh. What makes it worse is that they play this commercial at least twice during every break, so I cannot hear anything but that “uh huh huh” sound.
I guess [...]

PSP Racism?

When we watched the Quiznos Subs commercial featuring the really weird creatures, I was reminded of the PSP commercials they had like two years ago.
These commercials used animals (and dustballs) with voice-overs to advertise the PSP, and I found it odd that I could match a race to a certain accent/slang.  Is that wrong?
What race [...]

Self-Stereotyping

I did not get to show two of my commercials, so I thought I just put them on the blog.
They reinforce the themes I was attempting to develop in my presentation:
USA ads: Tend to represent Asian stereotypes in a negative way. Often shown to be disadvantageous or subordinate to something else.
Asian ads: Represent stereotypes but [...]

Role Reversal

Female stereotypes tend to emphasize women’s beauty and sexuality, and this is no more obvious than car advertisements in magazines.  These magazines are full of women in provocative poses.
This advertisement reverses this idea.  The women are in the car, and then a ton of men start stripping and washing it.
What effect does this have?

Wanna Fanta?

How can we talk about commercial music without mentioning the Fantanas?
I’m sure everyone remembers this group of four girls who basically advertise the drink with their bodies and sex appeal.  They also sing a really horrible techno song which basically consists of “Wanna Fanta? don’t you wanna?” repeated over and over again.
I had trouble finding their [...]

Wait a minute, that guy looked familiar…

DikembeMutombos post regarding subliminal advertising got me thinking about movie advertising which is similar to subliminal advertising yet always present and invisible.
Product placement in movies is practically everywhere in movies, but the film never advertises the products. This supposedly works in that advertisers are hoping you will remember that the main character drank Pepsi [...]

Cowboy-Dutch Girl Benetton Ad

I had a lot of difficulty understanding this pairing.
The first thing that came to my mind was KKK. The Dutch girl’s hat had a very familiar shape. When I coupled this idea with a very powerful and masculine black (very black) cowboy, it only furthered the assumptions I was making about the ad’s racial undertones.
The [...]

DO SOMETHING MANLY!!!

I was dissapointed in class today. I thought Professor Kronenberg was going to show this year’s Super Bowl Ads. I was looking forward to seeing this Snickers commercial again.
This commercial relates to our class because it deals with gender stereotypes. In addition, we discussed cultural references, so there might be a subtle Lady in the [...]
