The funniest banned ad I’ve seen

I don’t know if this ad has been posted yet, but this is definitely worth a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUkSO5Vv-UM
I’m betting that this ad was banned because of the “sexual” nature of the  and because it depicts suicide in a humurous way. I’m wondering though if this ad should have been banned, as I think compared to [...]

My own brand guessing game….

Inside the shoes you will be able to see a peek of the logo. As a bonus you can see the product as well. I dunno I thought it was funny the minute i saw the picture I instantaneously knew the brand. Ok, have fun.

Is Fantasy Bad?

Also in the “Packaging” article was a crate label for Genova grapes, which shows a Mexican-American guitar player, sensual dancer, adobe home, and grapes. The stylized and romanticized image “employs a visual appeal to the consumer’s fantasy life…[and by] identifying with the Mexican stereotype, the consumer can safely engage his fantasies at a distance” (16).  [...]

Aunt Jemima

I finally got over to the library for the Ethnic Images book! One of book’s articles– “Packaging: Container as Context” by Gail F. Stern–talks about the effects of such branding images as Aunt Jemima and the Dutch Cleanser girl. I had never heard of the Dutch Cleanser girl before, but I have heard about Aunt [...]

effective and hilarious commercial sans music

This commercial was one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. I thought it was very effective in presenting its point. And it reminded me of the boy and mom baking a heart-shaped cake ad in that there is a great twist at the end. (The sentiment in this one is quite different [...]

*** Updated: Innovative Packaging

( I realized most of them weren’t viewing correctly! This should work.) I grabbed these off a couple sites and an email. I thought these were pretty cool, and would really make me pay attention…although maybe not necessarily buy the product. Check it out:

Comedy Central is Better?

Speaking of generalizations, I think I have heard that Comedy Central allows for more liberal comedy because it is an independent station. That’s why it can have shows like The Daily Show, Chappelle’s Show, and Carlos Mencia. Does anyone know if that is true? Thanks!

Viva Mencia!

This is awesome!!!

Carlos Mencia does this song on a bunch of kinds of stereotypes, but unlike the George Lopez link in my last post, I think this one is very productive. It talks about all kinds of stereotypes, making the ultimate (and accessible) point that being stupid (or a “dee dee dee”) is the real [...]

Chappelle’s Show, George Lopez, and Others

Are these shows helpful?
Watch George Lopez, lovingly called “America’s Mexican,” make fun of Mexican fast food workers.

Watch his eyes bug out. Watch the white people in the audience laugh. You tell me–is this helping anyone?

Does Dundes Know What He’s Talking About?

Sometimes I wonder, like Dundes mentions, if studying stereotypes is “nothing more than helping to popularize and further circulate them” (114). And I guess that would be a qualm I had with the Dundes article itself. It does a great job about identifying stereotypes and the techniques and methods through which they are presented, but [...]
