Self-Stereotyping
I did not get to show two of my commercials, so I thought I just put them on the blog.Â
They reinforce the themes I was attempting to develop in my presentation:
USA ads: Tend to represent Asian stereotypes in a negative way. Often shown to be disadvantageous or subordinate to something else.
Asian ads: Represent stereotypes but generally obscure them so they are neither positive nor negative (unless they represent women in which case, they are generally always demeaning).
Nintendo Ad (Asia): The stereotypes shown are video games, martial arts/superhuman powers, and physical similarity.
Yao Garmin (USA): The question to keep in mind, “What does Yao say in this ad?”

I watched the Yao Garmin ad- the only comment Yao makes is “just my size” to create a reference to his height. The product being sold is a navigation device, which, I imagine, would most likely be put in a car. I think the ad is referencing the stereotype of Asians as poor drivers and in need of a navigation tool. The ad has nothing to do with basketball, and the device is compact so what is really the point of using Yao in the ad other than to evoke this stereotype?
