Has anyone seen these Star Trek spoof ads? It’s quite humorous and pretty creative as it spoofs MTV cribs with Star Trek. In this case, the crib is Spocks. Spock’s voice reminds me of that Sprite doll who always rolled with LeBron James, and definitely has that Hip Hop-esque “black” voice. I thought it was interesting how they gave him this type of voice, and also gave him likewise mannerisms. I was wondering why they give Spock which is quite the stern character in real life, such a different type in these ads? How are they using racial stereotypes to portray these Star Trek characters?

i think the most harmless explanation for giving spock black attributes is that this video is just trying to accurately re-create cribs, and that’s how people on cribs generally talk. they are also oftentimes black. the technique is effective, because i don’t think i would like the parody as much without it. the differences between spock and cribs hosts are very obvious, and that’s what’s entertaining. what as we read in “images that injure,” being effective doesn’t morally justifiy a hurtful portrayal. i think this is alright, though, for the most part. if someone was offended, then the situation should be re-evaluated…
