3. This commercial gives the supposed 10 items needed to have the best super bowl commercial. This commercial may not be as funny as others but is it as effective? The ten reasons it gives for a successful commercial are also very true.

This advertisement, which was featured during the super bowl, was one of the most humorous advertisements I have seen in a while. Although it was humorous I never seem to remember whom the ad is for. Is this just me or does anyone else have this problem. If other people have the same problem then, although humorous the ad is not effective
I was just thinking about this… People stereotype in large part because our brains put things we observe into categories in order to learn and remember things better. This is why we can recognize something as a “cup” even if we haven’t seen it before. It’s very hard to program computers to do this type of recognition and learning and none of them so far have even come close to a human mind.
Anyways, a big reason we learn stereotypes is because we observe them through the media and all the signifiers (accent, clothing, colors, physical appearance etc) go into categories in our minds as “german” or “indian” or “african.”
The problem, I think, is that our brains, in learning in this way, categorize like this regardless of the context. (This goes along with the implicit vs explicit memory.)
What I mean is, explicitly, we may recognize that tv shows like the Simpsons, South Park or Family guy often show stereotypes to criticize them and make fun of American society, however, implicitly (unconsciously) our minds still LEARN the stereotypes that are presented in the process.
I think it means that we need to be more creative in fighting stereotypes and a greater understanding of the human mind will help.
ABC is considering changing the way they advertise, so as to engage viewers in the commercial breaks. They are proposing ways to integrate the ads into the show and other ways to encourage viewer interest in ads. Though they did not release any specific examples, this NY Times article explains some of the background and implications of such changes. Any ideas what ABC could be planning?
I recently learned an interesting fact about this classic cartoon: the names “Tom” and “Jerry” originated during the WW2 era. The Englishmen were commonly refered to as “Tommies” while the Germans were called “Jerries”. Though I do not know the origins of these terms, it is interesting that the two cartoon characters should have the same names, especially considering the date of teh show’s tv premier (1941). The connection seems to make sense at first- two opposing forces that are constantly engaged in hostilities. Why, though, is Jerry the mouse (’good-guy’) and Tom the cat (’bad-guy’)? I think that this show, when approached from a historic perpective, is a very interesting manifestation of national stereotypes. Next time you’re watching Saturday morning cartoons, think about it….
This ad is a parody of the recent Mac advertisments depicting a hip young man (representing a Mac) and a stodgy middle aged man (representing a PC). This ad, however, presents an African American man representing the new black mac laptop. Perhaps this parody is a reaction to the total absence of non-politically correct humor within ads today. What if Mac actually put out an ad like this… what do you think the reaction would be?
I think this is one of the coolest websites I’ve seen. It’s a History of Branding site with thundreds of the most recognizable logos. You click on any of the pictures and it will take you to a page with a short summary of the companies history. Go check it out, even just to look at the homepage of logos.
I thought this site was really cool, and fairly related to my Future of Advertising presentation. It’s a Media Futures Archive. It’s articles on the possible development of media in the future. Some of the stuff is pretty interesting.
